Artist's Comments

My lovely velociraptor character, Bandit <3. God, I've had her for years, but I haven't given her much attention lately. So, I figured I'd post this old picture of her, as it's the only decent one I have of her.

One of the most unique aspects of Velociraptor is the "Killing Claw" it has on each foot. Each inside toe has a large (about 5 inches for a regular velociraptor, but Bandit’s is 7 inches long) hooked claw that is controlled by a strong tendon. This claw is held upward when the animal is walking or running. However, when it attacks, the tendon snaps tight and the claw snaps down with great speed and force, slicing deeply into the victim. Not a very pretty picture, but an effective way to inflict a serious wound.

Velociraptor was a pack hunter, which would have allowed it to attack prey much larger than itself. It also had a very large brain relative to its size - it was one of the smartest dinosaurs. It was very light and very fast. Recent thinking is that it was also very close to being birdlike, and that it had feathers that it used both for display and insulation. It had very strong arms and claws, which were effective weapons by themselves. It had sharp, recurved teeth in its long mouth. (Taken from the Velociraptor entry of the Jurassic Park Institute website before it shut down.)

-History-

Place of Birth: Site B
Past Injuries: Plenty, but they heal quickly
Backstory: *Being re-written* For now, if you really wanna know, look at the old one, which is conveniently located below.

Bandit was one of the velociraptors on Site B of Jurassic Park. The scientists there had been paid by the government to design an ultimate fighting machine, like no other that had been attempted before. They chose her egg, among several thousands of others, varying in species and gender. In order to make the perfect weapon that they dreamed of, the scientists had to extract the DNA as soon as soon as the eggs were laid in order to genetically alter it. Much of the genetic information that they altered included the strength, size, speed, resistance to certain chemicals, and even the healing times of the test dinosaurs. After these genetic alterations, they replaced the embryos back inside of the eggs and allowed them to develop normally, for the most part. Half of the starting number of test dinos died even before they hatched. The scientists placed the eggs back into the nests they had taken them from, and though some of the adults accepted them back with seemingly no problem, others disliked the smell and trampled the eggs to bits. The dinosaurs that survived hatched and grew up for the most part normally with their new families.

After just a year though, the scientist again snatched them away and performed another procedure on them. They had recently developed a new metal, whose properties allowed it to expand and seemingly grow as the substance it was attached to changed over time. Though this new metal was stronger than the thickest piece of steel, it was paper thin, and would allow certain substances to pass through it, like the semi-permeable membrane of a cell. Their goal was to get this new metal around the bones of the dinos to make them almost unbreakable, but the metal was only liquid at extreme heat and was solid at almost any heat below it. They concluded that it would be easiest, though extremely painful, to pour the new metal around the bone and let it harden.

After this procedure was finished, a mere ten of the test dinosaurs remained from the original number of nearly 5,000. These ten underwent one last procedure, where a computer and a series of other machines were attached permanently to their brains and various other parts of the body, making some of the organs obsolete. The organs that were unneeded were tossed out, and the machines took over the functions and performed them more accurately than the organs could have. Three of the ten survived this last procedure, Bandit being one of them. But something, unbeknownst to the scientists, went horribly wrong. Somehow, a virus had made its way into the computers now attached to them. The other two dinosaurs went insane in a matter of minutes, and had to be killed by the scientists (which I might add was incredibly tough to do seeing as they had made them nearly unstoppable.)

Bandit had also gotten the virus, but unlike the other two, had not gone insane, merely she blacked out for a few hours. She was operated on immediately, the scientists trying to fix anything that might have been screwed up or destroyed by the virus. They ended up doing more harm than good and eventually had to assign the computer many of the life giving functions that the organs would perform because the organs would not work properly anymore. They watched her for some time afterward, always keeping an eye out incase the virus did come back. They taught her many things, different languages, all of the different fighting styles, and everything she really needed to know up to college level. She learned not only how to act human, but she seemed to be more civilized than the rest of her kind. She made complicated decisions, and even had intelligent conversations with some of the lab technicians.

Despite everything they had taught her, the scientists still worried that the virus would come back and they kept her in a cage at night. She hated this, but more than anything, she hated that she never got to go outside. She heard them talk about the wild raptors, the ones they hadn’t done anything to, and inside she had a whispered longing to join with them and be free. Then one day, she decided she would pay them a visit. She tried to leave, but they wouldn’t let her. She became angry and threw one of them into the wall, letting her “teen angst” anger get the better of her. The scientists feared it was the virus coming alive in her again and fired upon her. Her instincts took over, and she fought them off, destroying the lab in the process. She ran, as far and as fast as her legs could take her.

She wasn’t sure exactly how she did, but she wound up near a river, her belly aching from lack of food. She saw an injured wolf near it and licked her lips, but when the time came to claim her meal, she couldn’t bear to kill him. The wolf, who she came to know as Six, became her first real and true friend, for he was the only one who truly came to understand her. She stayed by his side (only leaving every so often to go get food) and vowed to protect him and any he wished her to. She was deeply saddened and angered when he was betrayed and killed by someone he trusted, and was lost and alone for a while without him. That is until she met his brother, Black.

She gave Black the same devoted loyalty and friendship she had given Six. She even joined his wolf pack for a time. She also met a strange wolf with great powers named Bingo, who changed her and transferred some of his powers to her. Kiba met up with her and they became fast friends, he even helped her to get that nasty virus out of her system!

But as with all things, time tends to creep up on the unsuspecting. Kiba was murdered while Bandit sought out a velo pack and a mate for herself. She’s never found the one responsible for this, but it wouldn’t matter if she did, even now. She found other raptors deemed Mongo and Deny, and though Mongo had offered her sanctuary and a position in the pack that they were forming, Deny was never exactly keen for friendship with her because of his own past demons.

She had only her adopted son Cale, somewhat of an oddity, as she is herself, and Black’s friendship to guide her. She’s nearly given up on the dream of finding other raptors to form some sort of family with. Since Helix's recent death, she's been heavily mourning him and hasn't really felt much like making an appearance anywhere.

Other things

Theme song: Won’t Back Down – Fuel
Color code: a00000

*Note* I’m well aware of what Velociraptor’s were really like based on fossil evidence. But, considering this character’s background is in fiction, I’ve always gone with that story. It would be out of character now to change the long standing facts that have been roleplayed with and that many people recognized from Jurassic Park, both novel and movie. So, for the sake of correctness with the story (and since she’s been heavily genetically and mechanically modified anyway) she will remain featherless, tall, with a tail that is more flexible vertically than it really should be, etc.
